​As a business owner, the law requires you to construct a parking space designated for persons with disabilities. What you may not know, however, is the number of parking spaces to reserve. Note requirements for businesses with new constructions may be different from those that have existing parking spaces. 
 
If you are planning to construct a new parking space, you can use the following table as a reference. Keep in mind that there is also the minimum requirement for van accessible spaces.  In every six parking lots, there should be one designated space for vans. For example, if you have 200 parking lots, you would need to reserve around 33 slots for accessible parking, six of which would be for van accessible. 

Accessible Stall Compliance (ADA): What You Should Know

​In 2010, the U.S Department of Justice, also known as DOJ, published new laws under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Among the new policies was the 2010 American with Disabilities regulations for accessible design. The act outlined the minimum requirements for accessing buildings and facilities.
 
The 1990 ADA act contains guidelines for the construction of ADA compliant washrooms, which commercial and public bathrooms must follow. Also, these regulations act as a guide in situations where ADA compliance is not necessary. DOJ allows local governments to issue new or additional directives that businesses must follow. So, you should check the local code rules before you start construction. 

Is ADA parking lot compliance mandatory?

​The 1990 ADA laws require every building to have several handicap parking lots. As mentioned above, there are two types of parking spaces: van spaces and handicap stalls. You must have both parking spaces. The number of handicap spaces you should have will depend on the total amount of parking spaces you want to construct, as well as the type of business you operate.
